PSA: TSA photos are optional
This is just a friendly reminder that the photo that TSA takes of each passenger when checking ID is optional. They claim that the photo is not stored after identity is verified, but 1) that's not really how storage works, 2) I doubt it, and 3) even if facial recognition is everywhere, I'm trying to turn it down where I'm given a choice. Keep in mind:
- You must inform the TSA agent before stepping forward that you do not want your photo taken. Ask them to confirm that the camera has been turned off, because mine said OK and then told me after I stepped forward, "Well, I didn't turn the camera off yet."
- Don't be surprised if you are instructed to wait before proceeding to the screening area. I probably waited 3–5 minutes, during which time five or six passengers were verified and passed me, and then they ended up asking for my physical ID and boarding pass anyway.
